They were uprooted from there lands in South Eastern U.S. and sent to an "Indian Territory" in present day Oklahoma. Also known as the the Five Civilized Tribes.

Explanation:

These 5 tribes were the subject of the early efforts by the U.S. government to resolve the First Nations issues that they had. It was also a conflict between the Federal government and States rights. These First Nations were considered Federal responsibility but the Federal government would not defend these tribes against incursion by the States for fear of armed resistance by the States.

As a early effort to solve this these tribes were forcibly relocated to federally controlled lands in present day Oklahoma. This relocation was known as the Trail of Tears. The rounding up of large groups of people into camps and the marching of them in all weathers cause many deaths through disease and exposure.

Oklahoma eventually became a state and its lands were opened up to white settlement.
