The League or sometimes called the Confederacy was established for peace among the tribes. To the people themselves there is no difference.

Explanation:

Although the Iroquois language was widespread a group of 5 tribes banded together to promote peaceful relations among themselves. A 6 tribe eventually joined later. The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee as they call themselves were very important participants in the early years of colonization of North America. They were natural enemies of the Algonquin (and some Iroquois) speaking peoples in Northern North America.

The Confederacy split over who to side with during the Revolutionary War. They attempted to be neutral but the War happened in their backyard and they could hardly stay out of it. The confusing difference between the British and the Colonists was a difficult complication. The Peace negotiations did not include the Iroquois.

They we natural allies of the British for sometime. They fought the French extensively over the 17th Century. Through many shifting alliances they manage survive in a very hostile situation. After the War of 1812 the British no longer supported any Native people against the Americans.
