Ellis Island (New York) was the port of entry for emigrants desiring to enter the United States.

Explanation:

Ellis Island open up in 1892 in response to the large number of European immigrants desiring to enter the United States. Ellis Island served as a place where immigrants were documented and determined as to their suitability for entry. Basically they had to have $50 cash on them, have a sponsor and address where they would be going, and be healthy. There was also some screening for how desirable an entrant was: that is, they would send back people identified as criminals. They quarantined those who arrived sick until they regained their health.

It closed in 1954 and is today a nation heritage museum.
