Explanation:

After the battle of Gettysburg the south no longer had sufficient military force to launch another invasion of the north. The only path left to victory and independence for the south lay in the north giving up.

The loss at Gettysburg combined with the loss of Vicksburg at the same time was demoralizing to the South. The loss of Vicksburg cut off any supplies and reinforcements was Mexico and the Western States of Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. The loss of Vicksburg left the Union in control of the Mississippi.

The Army of Northern Virginia had only loss the battle of Antiemn before. In that battle the North had loss many more men than the south. The south had had to retreat but they retreated with pride. Gettysburg was the first battle that the Army of Northern Virginia felt like they had lost. Before Gettysburg the Army of Northern Virginia felt that they were unbeatable.
