The higher the concentration of the gas Carbon Dioxide in the the atmosphere the more photosynthesis is possible by green plants for making sugars and starches.
During the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Era, the levels of Carbon Dioxide were much higher than in the present atmosphere. The coal deposits (mainly formed during Carboniferous period) are the result of the prolific plant production during the times of high Carbon Dioxide levels.
