James Chadwick was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the neutron. He began his work as an assistant to Ernest Rutherford at the Cavendish. Rutherford's gold foil experiment led to the understanding of the nucleus of the atom and the empty spec in atomic particles.

Cavendish discovered the neutron in his work dealing with finding a cure for cancer. He went on to determine the mass of the neutron. His MAUD report led to the United States serious involvement in nuclear physics which eventually led to the atomic bomb.

I hope this was helpful.
