Bryophytes are often termed as Amphibians of plant kingdom. Amphibians are those organisms which live both on land and in water.
Bryophytes though grow on soil but need water for sexual reproduction. The sperms of bryophytes are flagellated and eggs are non-motile. Each sperm has two flagella. So, in order to accomplish fertilization sperm must be provided with water. So that sperm can whip its flagella in water and swim to egg to fertilize it.
