Why does it say "Someone thanked you"?

like, is "someone" a user name? or the user is anonymous?

Because...

Explanation:

... the system couldn't track the person's location by using their IP.

People who don't create accounts on Socratic can still give "likes" to answers, but the notification emails that you get will label them as

  • Someone... #-># if the IP couldn't be tracked to a specific location
  • Someone from [the name of the city + country or just country]... #-># if the IP could be tracked to a specific location--see this answer for more info on that

So when you get a notification email that reads Someone thanked you!, that means that one of your answers received a "like" from a user that didn't create an account--or that is not logged in--and whose location couldn't be tracked.
