Why is the ultimate goal of the Orion space program to investigate Mars?

The idea behind it is to create the most safe and advanced spaceship of all time - called Orion after the constellation.
Explanation:
The Orion spaceship is designed to be flexible enough to take mankind to several planets, I believe that NASA view Mars as an option for habitation - however as of yet just reaching Mars is an incredibly impressive feat as no human has set foot on it yet.
On the other hand, that fact means that currently, to the best of our knowledge, Mars is a planet inhabited entirely by robots (our rovers).
