Current can flow in one and not the other
Explanation:
A closed circuit is one where there are no gaps in the circuit and electrons can flow around it. An open circuit would have a gap which the electrons cannot move across so will not work. A switch is usually the way in which we show this in a circuit diagram but it could be a break in the circuit or a blown fuse for example.
