For capacitors in parallel:
The total capacitance
CTOT is given by:CTOT=C1+C2 Since
CTOT=QV the total can be found fromQ=CTOTV where V is the voltage drop across the capacitors.For capacitors in series:
1CTOT=1C1+1C2 So
Q=CTOTV -
Series, parallel and combinations of series and parallel/
There are four examples of combinations in the diagram. The following points show how to calculate the total capacitance of each combination.
1. Series
The equivalent capacitance, C , of the combination is worked out as follows:1C=1C1+1C2+1C3
or
C=11/C1+1/C2+1/C3 Total capacitance decreases in series.
2. Parallel
C=C1+C2+C3 Total capacitance increases in parallel.
3. "Parallel in series"
1C=1C1+1C2+C3 4. "Series in parallel"
C=11/C1+1/C2+C3
Example with numbers based on combination 4.
C1=200μF ,C2=400μF ,C3=400μF C=11/(200⋅10−6)+1/(400⋅10−6)+(400⋅10−6) ⇒C=17500+400⋅10−6=133⋅10−6+400⋅10−6 C=533μF
