Combination Capacitor Circuits

Key Questions

  • For capacitors in parallel:

    farside.ph.utexas.edu

    The total capacitance CTOT is given by:

    CTOT=C1+C2

    Since CTOT=QV the total can be found from Q=CTOTV where V is the voltage drop across the capacitors.

    For capacitors in series:

    farside.ph.utexas.edu

    1CTOT=1C1+1C2

    So Q=CTOTV

    There are four examples of combinations in the diagram. The following points show how to calculate the total capacitance of each combination.
    1. Series
    The equivalent capacitance, C , of the combination is worked out as follows:

    1C=1C1+1C2+1C3
    or
    C=11/C1+1/C2+1/C3

    Total capacitance decreases in series.

    2. Parallel
    C=C1+C2+C3

    Total capacitance increases in parallel.

    3. "Parallel in series"

    1C=1C1+1C2+C3

    4. "Series in parallel"

    C=11/C1+1/C2+C3

    Example with numbers based on combination 4.

    C1=200μF, C2=400μF, C3=400μF

    C=11/(200106)+1/(400106)+(400106)

    C=17500+400106=133106+400106

    C=533μF
