When dividing by a decimal, we make the divisor into a whole number by multiplying by a power of 10.

$\frac{8.5}{56.304} \times \frac{1000}{1000} = \frac{8500}{56304}$ $8.5/56.304 xx 1000/1000 = 8500/56304$

We can work this out by cancelling using common factors:

$\frac{8500 \div 4}{56304 \div 4} = \frac{2125}{14076}$ $(8500 div 4)/(56304div4) = 2125/14076$

$\frac{2125 \div 17}{14076 \div 17} = \frac{125}{828}$ $(2125 div17)/(14076div17) = 125/828$

However, this is probably unrealistic manually and we would probably have resorted to using a calculator in the first place.

A fraction answer is better than a rounded off decimal.
