Here, we want to add our like terms. We essentially have the following:

$x^2+x-x-9+17$

I just rearranged the order, but I didn't change the value of this expression.

We see the $x$ terms cancel out, and we're left with

$x^2-9+17$ , which simplifies to

$x^2+8$
