If we think of ${cos}^{2} (x)$ $cos^2(x)$ as our outside function, and $3 x$ $3x$ as our inside function:

We would calculate as follows:

$\frac{d}{d x} {cos}^{2} (x) \cdot \frac{d}{d x} (3 x)$ $d/dx cos^2(x)*d/dx(3x)$

Thus we would get:

$- 2 sin (3 x) cos (3 x) \cdot 3$ $-2sin(3x)cos(3x)*3$

$= - 6 sin (3 x) cos (3 x)$ $=-6sin(3x)cos(3x)$
