Start of by factoring;

$x^{2} - 2 x - 24$ $x^2 - 2x - 24$

Product =-24

Sum =- 2

Factors = -6 , 4

$\Rightarrow x^{2} - 6 x + 4 x + 24$ $=> x^2 - 6x + 4x + 24$

$= x (x - 6) - 4 (x - 6)$ $= x(x-6)-4(x-6)$

$therefore x^2 -2x -24 = (x-6)(x-4)$

So $(x-6)(x-4)=0$

So $x= 6, 4$
