How do you solve by completing the square: x2+52x=5?

To complete the square on the left side we need to add the square of half of the coefficient of the x term.
(This follows from the observation (x+a)2=x2+2ax+a2)

x2+52x+(54)2=5+(54)2

(x+54)2=10516

Taking the square root of both sides
x+54=±1054

So
x=5+1054
or
x=51054
