A line is a one-dimensional object, so if there's a measurement of mm (lets say its distance), the units are in "distance"^1distance1

A square is a two-dimensional object, which makes the units of area measurement mm "distance"^2distance2 or distance squared

A cube is a three-dimensional object, which makes the units of volume measurement mm "distance"^3distance3 or distance cubed

That's how I like to remember it, at least. Cubed means 3D, and 3 is your exponent!
