Put a value in before the "hat" and it should work. See below:

This is what 5 degrees C looks like. Without hashtags:

5^@ C

and with hashtags:

$5^@ C$

If you don't put in a value in front of the "hat", the math formatter doesn't know what to do with it.

Does that do what you want it to?

I've been using the old ASCII Alt+248 combination, and it seemed to be accepted.
