Common examples of aggregate fruits are:
Fragaria (Strawberry), Ailanthus, Calotropis (Ak), Annona squamosa (Custard apple), Rubus sp. (Blackberry).
Explanation:
Aggregate fruits develop from flower with apocarpous pistil. In these a number of simple fruits are present on a common thalamus.
These are of different types, depending upon the basis of simple fruits. The aggregate fruits are named by putting “etaerio” as a prefix before the type of simple fruit.
Different types of aggregate fruits are:
- Etaerio of Achenes, e.g. Fragaria sp. (Strawberry), Ranunculus (Buttercup), Nelumbium (Lotus), etc.
- Etaerio of Follicle, e.g. Calotropis (Ak), etc.
- Etaerio of Samaras, e.g. Ailanthus
- Etaerio of Drupes, e.g. Rubus sp. (Blackberry, Raspberry)
- Etaerio of Berries, e.g. Annona squamosa ( Custard apple)
