Inside each cell, parallel bundles of myofibrils are present. Myofibrils show alternate banding pattern on it: dark bands are anisotropic (under polarised light) or A band and light bands are isotropic (under polarised light) or I band. Each A band along with half of the I bands on its two sides form a sarcomere: a unit of contraction.
Banding pattern appears due to special arrangement of actins and myosins.The dark A band has both actin and myosin, while lighter I band has only actin.
