When the Pilgrims returned to England to plan their trip to America the Virginia Company approved their request to establish a settlement between Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Hudson River.
Originally there were two ships transporting the Pilgrims to America, the Mayflower and the Speedwell. During the beginning of the journey the Speedwell sprung leaks 3 times. Twice both ships delayed their departure from England. The third time the Speedwell returned to England while the Mayflower continued its voyage.
During the latter part of the trip the Mayflower ran into large storms. This caused the ship to drift north instead of on the intended course to the mouth of the Hudson River. The reached Cape Cod in mid-November.
At first they tried sailing south but because of the storms they were unable to accomplish this. The men on board the ship explored the surrounding areas for November and most of December. They finally decided to establish their settlement in Plymouth Massachusetts.
