$x=-8$ .

Given that $y$ is in the direct variation of $x$ . i.e., $y prop x$ .

$:. y=kx,...........(1), where, k!=0$ , is the const. of variation.

To determine $k$ , we use the cond.: when, $x=-1.6, y=-4.8$ .

From $(1)$ , then, $k=y/x=-4.8/-1.6=3$ .

Hence, $y=3x...........(2)$ .

Now, to find $x$ , when, $y=-24$ , we see , from $(2)$ , that,

$x=y/3=-24/3=-8$
