x=-8.

Explanation:

Given that y is in the direct variation of x. i.e., y prop x.

:. y=kx,...........(1), where, k!=0, is the const. of variation.

To determine k, we use the cond.: when, x=-1.6, y=-4.8.

From (1), then, k=y/x=-4.8/-1.6=3.

Hence, y=3x...........(2).

Now, to find x, when, y=-24, we see , from (2), that,

x=y/3=-24/3=-8
