Looking at few examples:

  • Let #color(red)(x = 2) , c = 8# so #color(red)(y = 2xx 8 =16#
  • Let #color(red)(x = 3) , c = 8# so #color(red)(y = 3xx 8 =24#
  • Let #color(red)(x = 4) , c = 8# so #color(red)(y = 4xx 8 =32#

As the values of #x# increase, #y# also increases and here #8# is the constant , only #x# and #y# keep varying and hence are variables.
