How do you name aldehydes?

You follow two rules.

Explanation:

  1. The name of the alkane is formed by replacing the final color(red)("–e")–e of the name of the parent alkane with color(red)("–al")–al.
  2. The carbon atom in the aldehyde group is automatically #1, so the "1" is not included in the name.

Examples

"CH"_3"CH"_2"CH"_2"CHO"CH3CH2CH2CHO is butanal.

"CH"_3"CHBrCH"_2"CHO"CH3CHBrCH2CHO is 3-bromobutanal.

"C"_6"H"_5"CHClCH"_2"CHO"C6H5CHClCH2CHO is 3-chloro-3-phenylpropanal.
